Cultural events in madrid december 20-22

Hi

we will be in Madrid on the weekend on December 20/22. How do I find out what events are happening those evenings? We are interested in things like theater or opera or concerts -- although we might try something else.

any advise on where that information can be found would be appreciated

A national event: Christmas Lottery. This huge lottery is drawn on 22nd December every year and the whole of Spain watches on TV.

One number will win the first prize, known as the El Gordo. If you have a décimo (see below) in that number, you win €400,000.

I worked as a statistician in the US. You have more chances of being hit by lightning than winning El Gordo.

However you can watch El Gordo on TV, which is unique. There is a school of orphans and these children sing out the winning numbers.

When I was in Madrid last week, it took me a few days to grasp what "El Gordo" meant. Several times a day, I walked through Puerta del Sol and could hear the lottery vendors say "El Gordo." At first, because my hearing isn't the best, and am self-conscious about my weight as well as just naïve, I thought they were saying, "Cómprelo, gordo." (buy it, fatty). Lol. It finally dawned on me that "el gordo" was the "big fat prize."

With regard to the lottery, I also noticed that there were several lottery offices, and sometimes early in the morning (around 8-9am), people were lined up there (one was by the Corte Ingles, I believe). Are they lined up to buy tickets, or to cash in a prize, or something else? I assumed, without investigating the matter, that they were there to cash in, which led me to further assume that the loteria is quite popular in Madrid. Are there other drawings throughout the year?

No they were simply hiding form the lighting strike :-)

There are several different lottery organisations in Spain. Not being a lottery player I would hazard a guess that one of the organisations was about to have a draw. There is always those who like a flutter nearer the time of a draw.

As far as I know all other forms of gambling a part from a few casinos have been outlawed. Hence the big interest in the various draws.

That makes sense. What struck me was that they were lined up well before the office even opened, which made me think they were pretty darn serious about it. I used to sell lottery tickets when I worked in small retail grocery store many years ago, but never had to deal with queues like those I saw recently in Madrid at the lottery offices.
