See www.renfe.com for the schedule of trains. You can buy your ticket in Terminal 4 and the price will include the Cercania to Atocha Station. There is one about every hour.

Walk up fare is about €80. The train is called AVE pronounced like AH-vay.

From Barajas airport you can take Yellow Express bus which goes to Atocha station or use the CERCANIAS line L-1 from Terminal 4 which is good with that free ride local train. Go to RENFE ticket window at lower floor. CERCANIAS. is local suburban train., Train every 30 minutes and takes less than 30 mins.

It is an important correction since many people would look at you baffled if you asked them about the 'bullet train'.

Remember the advice given above: you can book your train tickets online and these will include the Cercanías (local train) that you can get at Barajas to effortlessly get to Atocha, where AVE trains depart.

I got the impression that OP was first going to try to standby for the flight and if she didn't get on, then take the train. If that is so, I believe the AVE tickets purchased in the RENFE office downstairs would also include the Cercanía. They would also help you with the connecting times so you didn't buy a ticket and then miss your train at Atocha.

Well yes but the advice still stands, you can use Cercanías with the same ticket. It is not very relevant whether you buy them online or not.
