4 days in Madrid

Family with three young children traveling to Madrid for four days/five nights (Friday through Wednesday) in late June.

We would like to visit as many places as possible. We'll be renting a car. We don't have to stay in Madrid all nights. From what I've read here, it seems some of my options are Toledo, Avila, Segovia, Salamanca. Any suggestions? Keep in mind that the first two days are Saturday and Sunday, not sure what's open and what's not.

Renting a car in Madrid? That's more bother than it's worth unless you're used to the system.

How young are the children?

Thanks for your response.

The kids are 7, 4.5, and 3.

In what ways is renting a car a hassle? Is it finding parking? What about public transportation? Is it kid friendly?

Thanks

FJ:

Be aware that hotels in Madrid may charge 20 to 25 euros a day for parking. There is no free parking in most cities in Spain.

Train travel is the best.

On Saturdays and Sundays most sights are open. It is on Monday that most museums are closed. Many stores may be closed on Sunday.

Madrid is incredibly child friendly (as is all of Spain) and having a car is terribly inconvenient. The Metro is easy to use and your children will enjoy it if they are like children I know. You will not enjoy finding parking or paying for parking when it will cost you many more times what the metro or taxis will. There is a link to your right on the bottom with many things to do with children in Madrid. Children are welcome everywhere and at all ages!

You have a relatively short vacation. I would choose Toledo or Segovia as the one day trip and spend the remaining time in Madrid.

Segovia is easier with kids than Toledo with its hills and cobbled streets. Save Toledo for when they are older.
