Antoinette:

Bring a warm coat, gloves, and a sweater. Dress in layers because the outdoors will be cold but you will have to remove your coat in museums, which may be very warm. Also dress in elegant casual clothes and you can go anywhere. The women of Madrid are some of the best dressed in the world and are elegant. Wear comfortable leather shoes.

Honestly I never found the museums in Madrid that "warm". Most are temperature controlled to preserve the artworks they tend to keep they same temperature all year round around 22C. Of course when outside is freezing it feels warm, and when you visit in Summer and it's 40C outside, it feels nicely fresh...

But still, the best advice is wearing in layers. Not only because you will need to remove one or two layers when visiting museums or shopping/dinning. Temperatures usually vary quite a lot during the day. If it's sunny it may feel quite warm at midday, you may be ok on a t-shirt in a sunny terrace protected from the winds. But it may be near zero early morning, and temperatures drop quickly after the sun sets so gloves and scarf...

But it's a very dry weather, so more bearable. By the way, regarding dry air: when in Madrid I need extra hydrating face and hand creams, and lip balm.

Pack your most comfortable shoes. You will walk a lot. The women of Madrid may be (very arguably) some of best dressed in the world, but they are not walking all day long sightseeing in their stilettos ;-)

Buen viaje!
