Restaurants Near the Port?

Our cruise ship will spend a day (actually only 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) at Cartagena. We'd like to have a 1st-class lunch at a good restaurant near the port before reboarding. Or a couple of good tapas bars near the port would be a possible alternative. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

Once off your ship, cross the main road and head towards the town (you will see various iron soldier sculptures - walk past these to the pedestrianised area), The road through the town is full of restaurants on both sides of the pavement. They all display the menus outside so you can decide which one takes your fancy.

There are also a few cafes overlooking the harbour.

Thanks to Llamacalmer for responding, even though we'd already left home by then. For future readers of this thread, I now can report that the restaurant directly on the mole, "Porto Nuovo," provided a top-quality megillones/calamari a la romana/vino blanco light Sunday lunch on its open-air terrace. It's evidently well-regarded by the locals, as we were joined by a large first-communion-celebration party of prosperous-looking cartagenos. The day was too nice for us to want to sit in the dining room proper, but it looked very attractive too.

A topic resurrected! Yes, jdjn9, I do have some suggestiions. You will love Cartagena, which should be much better known as a tourist destination than it is.

1. The high point is the recently (1987) discovered, uncovered, and restored Roman theatre. Maybe a bit more "restoration" than some purists would favor, but you really get the feeling of these theatres.

2. To visit the theatre, you go through a simply exquisite little new museum on the history of Cartagena going back to (of course) the Carthaginians (think Hannibal). It's one of the finest small museums we've seen anywhere.

3. A few blocks away, again recently discovered/etc below centuries of later structures, is a typical ancient Roman merchant's house or "domo," including floor mosaics now under a glass walkway. I know of nothing like this except the recently-opened "terrace houses" in Ephesus, Turkey.

4. From the Roman domo, you can walk down a side street to the castello, take an elevator to the top, and enjoy a fine view of the harbor.

5. And finally, there's the new Museum of Underwater Archaeology, back down by the waterfront, featuring the ribs and keel of a salvaged Phoenician cargo ship found nearby.

As I said, you'll love Cartagena. (And don't forget lunch at the Porto Nuovo.)
