restaurant recommendations

Hi there,

We are going to Murcia in October and staying at the Mar menor resort. We may eat on resort a couple of times but prefer to find nice local restaurants which the locals eat in. Has anyone found any good ones in this area? We have a car and are quite happy to drive a bit if the food is good. We like to find one good restaurant for a special treat and some other restaurants which are reasonably priced and are suitable for kids. Also any specialities of the area we should look out for on menus?

Thanks

We stayed in los Alcazares in August-wish I was still there! We visited Cartagena one day and it was a lovely place to visit. Lots of nice local restaurants there one of the best value for money meals we had was the 'menu of the day' at the Rodin restaurant connected to the Amphitheatre. We had a gorgeous 3 course meal with a free drink plus coffee bread etc. All four of our meals were superb and the service was good, price 11 euros each.Didn't see the childrens menu but there were a few children eating there. We will be returning when we go back next year.

Los Alcazares is the main resort in the area and has a good selection of restaurants, from Chinese, Indian, Pizza and a couple of more upmarket places, as well as bars/cafes.

The back streets of Los Alcazares has quite a few tapas bars which are all very good, some doing burgers as well for the kids.

If you are into fish, Santiago de la Ribera, has a lovely fish restaurant right on the beach, which is only open to 5pm each day.

Good restaurants for children are the Wok Buffets which are all over the place - all you can eat for 8 or 9 euros, and the food is normally very good. There's one on the industrial estate at Balsicas, which also has 3 indian restaurants.

If you want a true Spanish experience, Casa Pepe on the main road through Balsicas is like the equivalant of a Spanish working mens cafe, but very clean and a menu also in English. It's basically 10 euros for whatever you want to eat or drink - 3 courses plus bread, wine, beer, water, coffee and brandy - it doesn't seem to put the price up! It's only open Mondy-Friday from noon to 5pm, but we always go at least once when in the area.

Thanks Jinxy and llama- some really good suggestions there. Like the sound of Rodin and the fish restaurant and even the working mens cafe sounds fun.

Any particulat recommendations of good tapas bars?
