My first holidays in Italy: Venice or Florence ?

Hi there,

I will be in Bologna around the middle of November and I would like this opportunity to make a small hook (3 days) either in Florence or in Venice.

I am looking for a captivating/exhilarating atmosphere (in terms of architecture, ambiance, culture, history and most important: food !), but something not stressful or "oppressive" (too many people, too much crazyness)

Basically, I am looking for a place to dream and get peace after 1 crazy year without holidays :-)

What would you recommend: Florence or Venice?

Your opinion would be much appreciated.

Ciao !

From Bologna Venice is nearest but you will hear pro's and con's for both Cities, both are beautifu, I would say Venice because it is unique, a City built on water, in November not so busy, even so any time Venice has places away from the tourist areas, which are unbelieveably quiet and peaceful,a small City but packed with interest,

You are really about to convince me about Venice if I was not slightly (yet deeply) annoyed with that aqua alta... :-/ :)

Does anybody else have a contribution/opinion to provide me §

Grazie.

I think this was discussed in your last post, about the Acqua alta, really should not deter you, it is short lived and not happening that often,

I vote for Venice. Both cities are captivating/exhilarating as well as busy, but I prefer Venice because the watery surroundings provided a sense of calm that I did not feel in Florence. Venice is definitely a place I could dream in and dream about.

Alright, you convinced me I think :-) Sounds dreamy, calm and "unusual" enough to have good holidays !

I love them both, but Venice is a more unique experience.

As we say in Warsaw, this is a no-brainer.

Florence is clearly the winner.

- Culture

- History

- Food

There's no question about it, Florence.

Venice has no cars so you may meander around and get lost (which you undoubtedly will) in this magical and beautiful city.

Florence has its wonderful museums, but the narrow streets and cars zipping around as if the drivers were on the autobahn, I would go to Venice.

Enjoy!

Hi

I agree with Global-Travels when it comes to Florence. Yes, Venice is unique and nice but with all the tourists I also got the feeling that it is quite artificial. I would say Florence is better as it is a city where life goes on despite of the fact that there are tourists. There are some amazing things to be seen, you can eat good food and drink great wine and you can take a drive in the beautiful Chianti area if you get bored of the city. I have trip reports with pictures from both places if you are interested. Send me an e-mail on gardkarlsen@hotmail.com and I'll send it to you :-) Good luck with the decision :-)
