Renting a car at Rome airport

How difficult is it to both rent and navigate traffic out of the airport? We are heading to Tuscany. Someone recommended we train it to Orvieto and rent the car there. Actually they also recommended that when we drop off the car rather than do that in florence, to do it in Sienna(I believe) and train it to Florence...

I'm an American living here in Rome and I;ll try and answer your question... It's pretty easy to drive from the airport to Tuscany area. First, you exit the airport and head into town on a interstate like highway. Before getting to town, you get on the GRA - a loop road that rings the city (called A-90 on maps). Follow this northeast (from 10 AM 0 1 PM on the clock face) and jump onto the A-1. Get off where you want to head into Tuscany.

I'd drive the car to Florence airport, drop off there and ride the shuttle bu (or taxi) into town!

RoninRome is spot on his suggestions for driving to Florence. It is not a difficult drive and the roadways will be familiar since they are superhighway layout.

The rental car desks are reached through internal walkways with overhead directions to the various offices. The cars are located a short distance away in parking garage. Besure that you take the extra time to check the car for any defects.

Have a look at www.viamichelin.com;then print the directions directly to the Florence airport. This will help you visulize the drive and give step by stop instructions as you reached transition roads to the next superhighway and exit.

You would have to be out of your mind to drive in the centre of either Rome or Florence, but the airports of these towns are not in the centre and have easy access by main roads.

Previous posters have suggested you use the autostrada (expressway) to get from Rome to Tuscany. While this is easy, the autostrada is very busy and has all the charm of an American Interstate. You might prefer to get more of a feel for Italy by getting a road atlas and using the ordinary country roads.

We (hubby) often drive in Italy without a problem, if you have good maps you cannot go wrong.

We also use www.viamichelin.com download your map before you leave. We find the roads to be excellent in Italy especially the freeways. Its the mad drivers one has to look out for...
