train travel btwn cities...eurail?

my parents will be going to italy in august for 8 days: Venice-Milan-Florence-Rome. THey want to use the train as their primary means of transportation to get to each city. SHould they purchase a Eurail Pass to use for the week? or would the train they'd use be a more local, commuter-type train different from Eurail? Any suggestions appreciated...

They should *not* buy Eurail passes. Buying point-to-point tickets in Italy will be much cheaper. The trains they will be likely to use will be fast ES or ES AV trains that require seat reservations that are *not* included in the Eurail pass and cost between 15 and 25 Euro. Seat reservations *are* included in point-to-point tickets bought in Italy. Trains are frequent and almost never sell out, with one caveat: If they plan to travel the evening of August 14, the morning of August 15 or the evening of August 16, they should buy the tickets as early as possible. August 15 is a huge holiday in Italy, and half of Italy is using the trains.

A pass is always very bad value in Italy - half the price for fast trains is a supplement not covered by Eurail.

There are no trains "different from Eurail" because there is no such thing as an Eurail train. Eurail is a marketing organisation selling passes.

ok. so they should wait and buy point-to-point tickets, it sounds like. That's a shame; we had wanted to buy their train tickets for them as a gift...is there any way to purchase those point-to-point tickets ahead of time online? Or will they get the best value purchasing the tix when they are in italy?

They can plan their trip at www.trenitalia.com using travel dates in the next 60 days. However, you cannot buy at the proper price in advance because the Trenitalia web site hardly ever accepts cards issued outside Europe. They will have no problem buying in Italy, and can use their cards there.
