Train from Rome to Florence

We will be arriving in Rome around 7pm with plans to catch a train the following morning to go to Florence. Would it be best to stay near the airport upon arrival and take the train to Florence, or spend our first night in Italy in the city before catching the train for Florence.

The selection of hotels near the airport is not very good: either convenient and expensive (the Airport Hilton) or not very convenient and with sometimes unreliable (generally paid) shuttle service. Go into Rome and stay near Roma Termini.

Depends whether you want to experience Rome for a night ??

The hilton Hotel is very close to the airport and is okay for a nights stay. I've stayed there numerous times and always have a comfortable stay. However, seeing you are catching a train and not a plane you would be best staying somewhere close to the train terminal.

If you catch the train from the airport to the Termini, just a block away is the Hotel Morgana that I have stayed in before and enjoyed greatly.
