staying in Montepulciano

I am planning an extended stay in Italy in August and September. We want to spend at least a week in Tuscany. Rather than moving around I would like to pick one location and take day trips. I have found a very reasonable apartment outside of Montepulciano. Would this be a good location to visit wineries and small towns in Tuscany.

Looking to stay away from the major Tourist towns. Any insight would be very helpful

We have stayed in Tuscany several times using San Gimignano, Lucignano, Siena, Lucca and lastly Montepulciano as a base from which to explore. Montepulciano was fine as a base. The only thing re staying in a villa out of town is that you then may have some difficulty in being IN town during the evening for a choice of restaurants, just wandering etc. There is no parking inside the walls unless you are staying inside the walls when you can sometimes get a permit. There is a ZTL at certain times as the streets are very narrow. Driving home on unfamiliar roads after dinner and wine is more than we want to do and we love the immediacy of being right in a town. That said, accommodation in town is a bit limited. We stayed at the hotel Il Marzocco just inside the gate and they had parking and a permit. Nice enough for the cost, with a view out over the valley, a bit traditional in decor, obviously an old hotel but clean with a good breakfast.

If you want a more upmarket place nearby, choose Il Chiostro in Pienza, We had one night as a treat but it is a bit expensive for our normal budget. The views, however, over the Val d'Orcia, are heavenly.
