ponit to point train tickets

question on purchasing point to point train tickets? if we go from rome to florence, when we purchase tickets at train station, does this include a reserved seat or is there another $11 to $15 to reserve a seat and do have to purchase at ticket booth or can we purchase from the ticket machine?

Trains that are IC, ES and AV include seat reservation with price. From Rome Termini to Florence Santa Maria Novella there's the ES A train, 62 euro for 1st and 44 for 2nd class, journey time is hour and half. Tickets can be purchased at a ticket window or the self-service ticket machines. (bright yellow)

The seat reservation is an additional charge. Cost much less to purchase in Italy, but seat assignments need to reserved ahead of travel.

The ticket machines promt you to add a seat reservation if you want one and take less than 5 minutes to use. The lines can become very long for the ticket counters with agents, so the machines are a real advantage.

No, it is not. Seat reservations, where required, are included in the prices quoted by Trenitalia. They are an additional charge if you have a rail pass.

And the machines no longer prompt you to add a reservation. They used to do this for InterCity trains with optional reservations, but it's now done automatically as all trains now have either compulsory reservations or none.

For reserved seat assignment, are you saying there is no additional charge or it depends on what point to point you are traveling? I would like to have this defined. It would be a big help. Anytime we have reserved seats, we have paid for that reservation. Thanks so much.

On trains where seat reservations are required, the price charged by Trenitalia automatically includes the cost of the reservation.

Reservations are not required on the slow Regionale trains, and so (obviously) there is no seat reservation charge.

thank you..so to clarify, if we purchase train tickets from the ticket machines, we will be assigned a seat with our reservations if assigned seats are required? also can we pick our seats on the trains? asking because we have party of 5, do we have to purchase all the tickets at the machines at one time so we wont get separated or what happens if we purchase one at a time, any thoughts? plus these ticket machines require exact amount for purchase,no change?

For more information than you might want to buying train tickets, see http://tinyurl.com/buy-train-tickets

Note this is slightly outdated, in that Amica fares are no longer available on most trains. The machines shown are at Rome Termini: other stations have machines that are either the same or similar.
