When to Book Hotel Rooms

I have just purchased airline tickets for our first trip to Italy Oct 2- Oct 14, and have been reading as much as I can. I need to know how far in advance I should book any hotel rooms. We will be spending 3 nites Venice, 3 in Florence and 5 in Rome. I am used to making my own travel arrangements but am a little overwhelmed since this will be our first trip to Europe. Also, when out , should we take our passports with us or leave them in the room safes, and if no room safe do you then leave them at the front desk? I know to make copies of all identifications, but was curious about the originals Thanks

In general, prices do not go down and, even in October, hotels can get full. Book when you find somewhere nice.

In theory, you should carry your passport at all times in Italy. In practice, a copy is usually accepted. Just leave the passports out of sight in your room. With the security features built into passports these days, they are of no use to anybody else.
