Best time to visit Italy?

Planning to visit Rome, Venice and Florence/Tuscany either this year or early next. When is the best time to go? Especially interested in avoiding huge crowds, but also interested in weather and any other factors that might make certain times of year better or worse. Thanks!

From a weather standpoint, July and August are the hottest/dryest months in both the north and south of Italy, and also the most crowded. April through June is nice, although it can be rainy. Likewise the other "shoulder" months of September and October are very nice, particularly earlier in October. (Obviously if you are coming for the skiing, then the winter months are what you want.)

On the other hand, if you are going to spend most of your time in art and antiquities museums, then almost any months work, although winter accomodations may be more limited, they may also be less expensive.

Easter, Christmas and New Years will be busy because they are usually vacation breaks (albeit short ones) for someone somewhere.

We chose mid-September for our three weeks this year in Florence and Umbria because of the better chance of good weather, lesser crowds (although some places will always be crowed, especially during the daytime) and availability of harvest festivals, winery harvests and fall harvest olive oil pressing. Other of our friends prefer May when the fields are greener and the poppies are blooming, or late June when the sunflowers start to bloom. Mostly it depends on what you want to see and when it is available. Hope this helps.

My personal preference is May: The weather is generally good, the days are getting longer rather than shorter, and Italians in the tourist industry are less frazzled.

I am with Zerlina.....use to go with the summer mob but last 4 trips have been april May....arrive in April this year again. Work on the same principle as Z ....the years trade is just heating up and the Italian tourism industry is warming up as well so far less fractuous
