Family tour or free travel?

Would like to travel 2 weeks to Italy from Los Angeles with family, kids are 15, 12 and 8. Should we book a tour or travel on our own? It seems that the cost is going to be somewhat similar.

Are you hiring a car or taking public transport? Depends on whether you want to have the itinerary all sorted for you and you don't have to worry about getting your own transport.

We travelled by train/us everywhere for a month and had no problems but then I worked out all the itinerary, where we went, when we needed to arrive, arranged accommodation near train stations so we could walk to it and arrive to book in on time. Found out the train timetables to suit before we left home. Did our accommodation bookings via internet. Worked out what there was to see and do where ever we went via the net. It takes time to do all this and is something to consider.

However, I enjoyed being able to go when we wanted, arrive when we wanted, eat when we wanted, shop in the supermarkets and great delicatessans for food and wine, mingled more with the people, bought at the local markets and spent time in one place longer.

So they both have their merit.
