Suggestions for a short trip to Italy

HI :)

We (myself , wife and our 3 year old kid) are planning a 2 week trip to Europe, starting 24th of May to 10th of June 2012.

Countries / cities we would like to see are France (Paris), Italy - Venice for sure and Milan perhaps, and also do a bit of Austria.

We are not on a budget budget but still would not like to spend too much.

May I please request some suggestions for this trip touching upon:

Good cities / places for shopping,

Recommendations on the number of days to spend in each city.

What would be the best 3 or 4 cities to cover in 2 weeks to make the most of this trip.

We could alter our places to see depending upon some good suggestions.

I am tempted to see more countries but so confused as its my first visit to Europe.

Will highly appreciate suggestions.

Thank you.

Are you flying in/out of Paris from Delhi or could you do an open-jaw/Multicity ticket

e.g. fly in to Paris out of Rome.

Consider using budget airline www.easyjet.com

They have a number of routes around Europe

e.g.from Paris - Venice/Pisa/Rome/Milan/Naples meaning you could easily get back to Paris should you be fixed to flying in/out of Paris

Then use Italian trains www.trenitalia.com for your Italian cities of choice

AUSTRIA

Austria could be a bit awkward unless you drop an Italian city or possibly hire a car. It would also be more awkward should you need to again fly back from Paris.

Much depends what you would like to see/do in Austria.

e.g. cities (Vienna or Salzburg) or mountains or a bit of both.

There are 5 direct rail services daily from Verona via Austria (Innsbruck) to Munich and 1 direct rail service from Venice to Munich. The Verona-Munich services are operated by German National rail www.bahn.de

You can book these services (and the 1 direct from Venice) up to 92 days in advance and take advantage of discounts.

If interested in mountains you should be aware that many cable car systems shut down at the end of the ski season around April and don't reopen again until end of May so keep Austria leg until the end

So if you want Austria

Fly Delhi - Paris

Paris - Venice www.easyjet.com

Venice - Innsbruck - perhaps hire a car and travel around

Innsbruck / Salzburg - Munich

Munich - Delhi

or instead of Innsbruck /Salzburg /Munich

Innsbruck - Zürich

Zürich - Delhi

OR

from Venice to Vienna

Vienna - Salzburg - Munich

Munich - Delhi

(only 4hrs by train from Vienna to Munich)

Salzburg is very close to the German border being only 2hrs by Regional train from Munich - even faster by fast Intercity services

from Salzburg you can visit Berchtesgaden, Königssee

www.kehlsteinhaus.de

www.koenigssee.de

Halfway between Munich and Salzburg is the Herrenchiemsee on lake Chiemsee

herren-chiemsee.de/englisch/tourist/index.htm

www.oebb.at for Austrian rail

OR

completely different consider 3 cities in 3 different countries.

Spanish Airline www.vueling.com like Easyjet have numerous flights around europe with links between Paris and Spain and Spain and Italy.

You could utilise both airlines and do

You could consider Paris - Venice - Madrid

or

Paris - Rome - Madrid

Paris and Venice are both great choices. I would skip Milan, it's not that interesting or scenic. Rome is much more of a must-see city, but if you don't want to go that far south, consider Lake Como (you can take a train from Milan), or Florence. Italy is wonderful! Can't advise you on Austria, I haven't been.

Resist the temptation to do too much - 4 cities is about right for a 2-week trip, if you want time to really get a feel for them and not spend all your time on planes & trains. You're mostly focused on big cities, but consider at least a night or two in a smaller town for a change of pace (e.g. Lake Como area, or somewhere along the French/Italian Riviera...we did one trip starting in Paris, then by train to Rome with stops in Cannes and Rapallo.)

Further to above you can get flights from Venice to Nice with Easyjet (Personally prefer the town of Antibes a short distance from Nice).

We always drive to Antibes (holiday/break/visit friends in Cannes) however it is quite easy from anywhere along there to get a train for instance to Monaco/Monte Carlo as a day trip (parents did it from Biot train station nr Antibes)
