You want a city or seaside or countryside stay?
If city, consider Bologna - incredible city with so much to offer and easy access from there to Ferrarra, Parma, Modena, etc via train but I stayed four days just in Bologna and will return to see all I missed.
But - what sort of area are you hoping to identify?
Hi MomCat. We can't decide what we are looking for.. haha....that's the problem, or the JOY of Italy I guess. So many places that sound great. So just looking for ideas and opinions about other people's favorites. Yours is a good idea...any more details appreciated.
And then we think, well maybe we should spend all 11 days in Umbria, where we will have time to really relax and settle in for a bit. So, opinions on spending 11 days in Umbria also welcome...will we "have enough to do"? We tend to keep ourselves way too busy on our vacations, with our only regrets being that we wished we had given ourselves more downtime.
All are very easy trips from Bologna.
I'd vote for Florence also. I have been there twice and there is still so much more to do. Wonderful place, terrific art and architecture, easy to get to/from and around.
We really enjoyed the time we went south from Sorrento, the cut over to Matera, Monte St Angelo on the spur of Italy, Scanno, Norcia and the stunning plain above it covered in wildflowers and backed by the snow capped Sybilline Mountains, then on the Urbino. Mostly the other tourists were Italian and we saw a very different Italy.
