Cheap accommodation in Rome

I am travelling alone to Italy for 3 weeks starting in Florence, Rome, Naples, amalfi coast, Venice and verona.

Can anyone give me any recommendations for cheap accommodation (b&b or hostel) in a safe area in Rome?

I have heard the area around termini isn't very safe/nice is this true?

Any help appreciated.

Try www.booking.com and look at the City Guesthouse. It is just a 15 minute metro ride from the Termini but is in a lovely area just off the Via Tuscolana and its not only a very good guest house and reasonable, but the whole area is much cheaper than the centre with loads of shops and restaurants. Its not too far away from the Cinecitta film studios either, so if a film buff, its great.

I've stayed in both these places, very central but maybe not as cheap as a hostel

Try looking on www.venere and www.booking.com for prices, often cheaper than the hotel direct

This hotel is about as cheap as a hostel:

I stay there fairly often; it's clean, comfortable, and well-run by a very nice family who live on the premises.

The area around Termini might not be very nice (compared to other parts of Rome) but is safe. It is not bad at all in my opinion and there are many cheap hotels in the area. It is also convenient as far as transport is concerned. You can walk to the historic center in 20-30 minutes.

Hotel Urbis is a nice and cheap place, but it is at the Termini:

You might find cheaper hotels around the Vatican as well.

Actually, only Jessybobs' recommendations are really in the center of Rome, but that's the most expensive part of the city. I often stay in the Termini area, where lodging is much cheaper. Some parts of the center are an easy walk from there, and for others, there are very good transportation options.
