Rail travel Venice - Rome

Over the course of about a week, my partner and I will be travelling from Venice to Rome. We are in Venice to 3 nights, then Florence for 3, and then travel to Rome.

We are not looking at buying a rail pas, rather point to point tickets which seem rather affordable for us (via http://www.railplus.com.au/).

We're not sure though if it's better to book now, and have these tickets on hand, or to buy these tickets as soon as we arrive in Venice.

Any suggestions?

Grazie

If you want to buy your tickets ahead of time you want to use the official Trenitalia site

http://www.trenitalia.com/ also

if you are firm on dates and times you could possibly be able to buy deeply discounted super economy or economy tickets. Again only do so if you are 100% of days and times, they are not refundable. If you buy on-line you are sent a confirmation email with all the details and a PDF that you print out to show the conductor. It is really a great way to buy tickets in advance.

You can purchase train tickets very easily at the train station using self-service machines.

Your itinerary could change so wait until you arrive in Italy.

Note that bought 120 days in advance, you can usually get super economy tickets @ €9 each. As mentioned, your plans need to be firm as they are basically non-refundable, and make sure you set the time of travel on the front page.

I think from Venice to Rome, the cheapest tickets are €19 on the really fast Frecce trains, although there are €9 trains on the rather slower InterCity trains. Still a lot cheaper than the full Base price of €80 second class for a Frecce.

And, as €80 is about $100 AUD, these prices totally knock over the $182 price quoted by RailPlus.
