Venice to Sicily

Planning on spending the month of September 2013 traveling in Italy. This will be our first time doing this on our own. Visited back in 1983 with a tour without my husband. This time I want it to be an adventure for both of us. Here is what we are planning, any advise and comments will be appreciated. Arrive Venice

2/3 nights Venice

2 nights Parma (We are foodies)

3 nights Florence

3 nights Southern Tuscany (need ideas of where to stay here other then Sienna)

We plan on renting a car leaving Florence and returning it in Rome

1 night Orvieto

We think we would like to travel from Rome to Catania via airplane

8 nights Sicily (We have family here and this is a must)

Then return via???????to Sorrento

3 nights Sorrento

3 nights Rome

Is this a doable itinerary any suggestions greatly appreciated

Hi RBF!

Sounds like a wonderful trip. Lots to comment on, lots of moving parts to your itinerary. I can start here:

You ask

>>>3 nights Southern Tuscany (need ideas of where to stay here other then Sienna)

We stayed here and used it as a base to explore southern Tuscany and TOTALLY enjoyed it. I will definitely stay here again next time.

You really need a car to see the best parts of rural Tuscany. Val d'Orcia is stunning! You mention that you are foodies, are you winies as well? (winos?) (winophiles?) If so, then you'll really enjoy that region...and it's fun to see how exactly perfectly the foods of the region match the wines they have ended up producing.

Welcome to Sicily rosiebeeFlorida - September is a lovely month to visit!

The Valdorcia is stunningly beautiful - Having trouble picking a hotel in Val D'orcia/Siena:

tripadvisor.com/…38020162

It’s not efficient use of your time to divide your stays in Rome – See Rome at the end of your holiday to better position for your departing flight.

Drive from Orvieto to Rome’s airport and return the car at FCO.

blu-express and Alitalia fly from Rome Fiumicino to Catania.

Meridiana flies direct from Rome Fiumicino to Catania, but best avoided - Meridiana is now operating under a temporary license:

tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g187791-i22-k60470…

But perhaps see Campania prior to Sicily!

You could drive from Orvieto onward to Sorrento and return the car in Sorrento – Alitalia and Air Italy fly direct from Naples to Catania.

But if you see Sicily first, then fly onward from Catania to Naples, or take the overnight TTT Lines ferry service from Catania to Naples, and then take the train from Naples to Rome for your departing flight.

This is an excellent itinerary that maximises your time rosiebeeFlorida!

Avoid driving in Florence – Take the bus to the airport and hire the car at the airport.

Alitalia flies direct from Naples to Palermo – Book on the Italian site for the lowest rates.

Save Money By Booking Alitalia Flights “Like a Local”:

roninrome.com/transportation/booking-alitali…

Buses are more reliable than trains in Sicily. The train from Palermo to Taormina is eternal.

Take the SAIS Autolinee bus service from Palermo to the airport in Catania, and then take Interbus from Aeroporto Catania to Taormina.

http://www.saisautolinee.it/regionali.htm

http://www.interbus.it/

Alitalia and blu-express fly from Catania to Rome Fiumicino.

Buon viaggio!
