Availability of City Maps

Looking forward to our first trip in May and spending 5 nights in each of Florence and Rome. Want to enjoy these cities as much as possible and have not yet found any real decent "carry in your pocket" city/street maps to help us as we stroll through neighborhoods. Have several tour books with maps but really don't serve the purpose we hope for. Are there maps available at airport/bus stations or even in the hotels which can be used? Thanks as always for everyone's help.

Usually the hotels will have a paper map showing the main sites and full of advertising for establishments. They're not too bad for a basic overall view. Barnes & Noble sells Streetwise laminated (foldable) maps, as does Amazon.

Termini has a bookstore in the basement that has good maps.

Bring some basic maps with your though if for some reason you can't get one right away. Amazon has all the amps you might need.

Your hotel will 'usually' have a free paper street map of the city your staying in. The good thing about this is you can mark them up with a pen or pencil to keep yourself from getting totally lost. They fold up easily and can be stuffed in your pocket or purse. The next day you can draw up a new route with points of interest or restaurants marked and off you go. Yes, they will have advertising of some sort around the edges...big deal.
