Prepaid roll toll credit card

We are travelling in Italy and Germany, Belgium etc. by hire car. Is there a prepaid card we can purchase for all the road tolls or is it only cash? Your help would be appreciated.

Each country has its own system of tolls. (There are almost none in Germany.)

There is no prepaid credit card. In France, you can get an electronic tag that fits inside the windscreen and deducts money from your account (like for Melbourne tolls), but you need a French bank account. Same in Italy.

In theory, credit cards are accepted but I always have a concern (especially in France) that my Australian card will not work, so I head for the gates that accept cash.

You can see how much you will have to pay by putting your route into www.viamichelin.com

I have put together some notes on driving in Italy, including how to pay tolls at www.nickbooth.id.au/Tips/ItalyDrive.htm

Thank you very much for your detailed information. It is contributors like you who help to make our planning so much easier.

Can you please tell me whether vehicles in Italy are in mph or kilometres? Also do you know if you can purchase a prepaid toll card as a friend advised that if you are paying cash at the toll booths that the line ups are quite long.

There is a prepaid card for all the Italian Autostrade called VIACARD worth 25 or 50 euro.

You can purchase in almost all the Autogrills along the Autostrade and in some city or town tobacconist.

When drivers approach the toll stations, need to enter the lane/s signalled above with the logo of the VIACARD. it saves a bit of time each time compared with other lanes reserved for cash payment.

When a card is nearly expired, it is recommended to enter a lane with the double sign of cash and VIACARD.

If there is an operator at the shelter, hand first the card and then will appear the amount of cash to be handed for the balance.

Simply use your credit card, non need to buy additional cards. VIACARD and self pay booths accept all types of credit cards
