Trains from Venice to Rome

Hi

I will be travelling in Italy from 1st June to 8th June and will be travelling with 4 other friends. We are trying to get a sleeper train from Venice back to Rome and would like to book a train on the InterCityNotte 771.

However, I would like to find out if the 2nd class tickets on Trenitalia website are sleepers? Or do I have to couchette tickets? Are we assigned seats or are we allowed to chose our seats?

Thanks!

If you only buy 2nd class tickets this will be for seats, not couchettes;, but in any case the site asks you a number of questions aimed at choosing your sleeping accommodation. What you probably want is a 4-berth couchette compartment. See "Italian overnight trains" on here: http://www.seat61.com/Italy-trains.htm

Thanks for the clarification. The site you provided is really informative.
