Buying Train Tickets Rome-Sicily

When is the best time to buy intercity train tickets from Rome to Sicily? Will there be a huge difference in price if we buy them 3 days before, as opposed to 60 days before?

For the best prices, book direct with the train operator as far ahead as possible. Tickets go on sale 4 months before travel, and the cheapest tickets often sell out quickly. Discounted ticket prices keep going up as the travel date gets closer.

You can get train times and costs from www.trenitalia.com using the Italian names for towns. There is also a new operator serving Milan, Bologna, Florence, Rome, Padova, Venice, Naples and Salerno: http://www.italotreno.it/EN

There is a considerable difference in price. For example, the full price for Rome-Messina in an InterCity train is €57.50 but if you book early you might get a ticket for €19 or even €9.

However, Rome to Sicily is a journey better done by air. The journey takes 8 to 9 hours, and there are no modern trains as the tracks beyond Naples are not suitable for high speeds. If you book ahead, you can get an Alitalia flight for around €70.

Being able to see panoramic views definitely influenced our decision to take the train...and we planned on buying 1st class tickets. Would it be better to buy 1st class tickets now, or wait until a few days before? Our trip is in september.

See the first paragraph of reply #1 for the answer to that question.

I hit the wrong reply button so I accidentally replied to my own question...was trying to ask the opinion of frecciadellalaguna90.

I had already seen the 1st reply.

Thanks for your help though! :)
