Car rental in Italy

we are 4 persons with 4 pieces of luggage plus carryons in Italy for 14 days. Any advise on where to rent or what to avoid? what about GPS, do you bring your own with Italy maps or is it better to get one with the car rental?

all advise is welcome. thanks.

Bring your GPS, in 14 days you will pay more than buying a brand new one. Make sure to waive the excess and don't mix gasoline with diesel when refueling. Are you comfortable with manual gearbox?

book online at www.autoeurope.com. They are a broker and offer the best prices...Rental will ultimately be through somebody like Avis, Hertz, Europcar or some other larger agency. Also, they will match any lower price you find of equal rental. In the end however, be sure to compare insurance packages quoted no matter who you rent through.'

Depending on the size of luggage, you could get away with a compact size like a Fiat Bravo or a Peugeot 308...but if larger pieces, go to a midsize.

You will need to get an International Driver's Permit. This is mandatory by Italian law. The rental company might not ask for it but the police will if you are stopped.

Do not even think about driving into cities like Rome, Florence, Milan (and you can't drive into Venice anyway - you must park and use public transport into Venice)....There are many ZTLs (read up on them above right. You GPS will not indicate where these are or if you have entered one. The fines are heavy.

A car is really just best for the countryside areas like Tuscany.
