Traveling to Paris and in Italy

Good Morning everyone,

We are planning a trip to Paris and Italy in mid September 2014 for 21 to 24 days. We are writing this message to all the Trip Advisor readers for help and suggestions. We want to thank everyone in advance for ideas, thoughts, and suggestions about our trip that we have discussed below. THANKS!

Our goal is to see the country and enjoy the local flavor of the various cities as much as we can. In the large cities we would like to take a city tour to learn about the history. Otherwise, we want to enjoy the smaller restaurants, the food, and the shops. We are foodies so we want to enjoy the home cooked local foods. We would like to stay at the local B&B as much as possible so our expenditures go to the local communities. Our plan is to travel by rail as much as possible. We have been told the only way to see the Tuscany region is to rent a car, so looking for suggestions of what cities to see and where to stay and eat (that is the local flavor we are really looking for). Very much up for suggestions that is why we are planning this a year in advance.

Our itinerary is flexible if someone has suggestions, here are the ideas that we have about our trip. Fly into Paris and stay 3 days (stay in Paris and walk) Take a city tour for sure. Take train to Venice (3 Days),then train to La Spezia and travel Cinque Terre area (3 days), Train to Florence (3 days) then pick up car to travel the Tuscany region (3 days) drop off car not sure where to pick up or drop off. Take train to Rome (3 days) train to Naples and Amalfi coast (5 days) then fly back to U.S. through Rome.

We have probably missed some important areas that is why we are up for everyone’s ideas and suggestions. As you can see our number of days is not totally set, flexing between 21 and 24? very flexible with the amount of time (within reason Ha Ha! )

Thanks again for everyone’s help.

Lary and Deb

I think you have the right idea. It's not overly rushed, and you're allowing a reasonable amount of time most everywhere. Although you might wish you'd spent at least one extra day in Rome, as there is awful lot to see there.

After Tuscany, you might consider going down to the Naples/Amalfi Coast region first, then save Rome for last. Just to avoid having to check into a Rome hotel twice.

If you stick with your plan to rent a car for Tuscany, don't forget to get an International Driver's Permit (about $15 from AAA).

Good luck.

One more tip - about three months before go, see if you can score some discounted train tickets on the official Trenitalia site...

I'd suggest a cheap flight between Paris and Venice ( or Milan, then train to Venice). That train ride doesn't get the best reviews.
