italian lakes

We have managed to get 4 airmiles flights to milan in June next year for the purpose of visiting the italian lakes. we had been thinking about lake como but the flights go to milan malpensa which is much closer to lake maggiore. we have stayed in como for a night before and really liked it but wonder what tripadvisor visitors have to recommend between either como or maggiore. we are 4 seniors, like walking but these days more on the flat than hills. we are hiring a car so will be able to do as much driving as is necessary. not sure either whether to take a couple of bases for a few days each, we are there for 9 days. we enjoy beautiful scenery, gardens and historical sites. we would welcome all suggestions and advice.

Hi!

As you have already been to' Lake Como I suggest Lake Maggiore. There's lots to see: Isola Bella with it's beautiful gardens, Isola Madre, Villa Taranto and its lovely gardens, lEremo of Santa Caterina .... There's a ferry service. Then you can go up to Mottarone mountain where you'll get a lovely view down on Lke Maggiore on one side and Lake Orta on the other.

If you post your question on the Lake Maggiore forum you'll probably get more answers.

Bye :)

Surely you could visit Lakes Como and Maggiore with a 9-night stay, or perhaps consider two bases on Lake Maggiore.

If you've only visited Como (town) in the past, then you might enjoy Lake Como's more scenic mid-lake area. Menaggio is lovely and flat.

But Stresa on Lake Maggiore is also an excellent option, and also the lovely town of Cannero Riviera, and the very wonderful Hotel Cannero.

The fact that you're arriving in Malpensa doesn't really make that much difference as you can get a quick train to the Central station, then from there you can easily get to the other lakes, I would also consider Lake Garda because you're going in June and hopefully next year the weather will be better than this year because if it's not it would be good to vhave a back up plan which from Garda is easy becaue you're near Venice and Verona and some other nice cities.

Prego theoldgits,

Certainly with an arrival at Malpensa and 9 nights, you could enjoy stays at both lakes, perhaps Menaggio and Stresa. then.

And if the weather doesn't cooperate, perhaps Milano, Luagno, and even Bergamo.

Enjoy!

choices, choices. still, plenty of time to decide. we will probably be hiring a car which will give us rather more flexibility. which is not to say that italian trains dont give a first class service because they do (compared with the ones in the uk at any rate). and cheap as well. having looked at the map and worked out some distances it certainly seems feasible to do more than one lake.

Yes, it certainly is feasible to do more than one lake, especially if you plan to hire a car.
