Hi, we have been given a flight in and out of Milan in mid March of next year. We are having a hard time deciding an itinerary given the time of year. May we solicit some opinions?
Working backwards: We are spending the last night in Milan, and the 3 nights before that in Lucca. But where best to spend the first two nights? The issue will be the weather. Since it's likely to be rainy and cold, we' like to find a good base that will maximize our options. Will a mountain village be ill advised? If it's raining too much, it does make more sense to be near a city, no?
We are renting a car and driving from Milan. Originally thought we'd do first two 2 nights in Bologna, but are starting to reconsider, based on reviews saying it's depressing under all the porticos, full of graffiti, pollution and grime, and has worse weather than most places. Is 5 nights in Lucca too much? If you had 6 nights and a car, how would YOU spend it? (In March, that is....)
FYI, We love small towns and driving off-the-beaten path roads most of all (for the history and photography) and adore biking and hiking in the Apennines. We've done Venice, Florence & Rome, and earlier this year enjoyed a week in Umbria area (so amazing--our favorite part of Italy!)
I know this is awfully general, but maybe someone will have a wonderful tip... thanks in advance if you do.Edited: 09 October 2013, 21:57
