Train from Rome to pompeii

We are in Rome in January- Limited budget and want to take train to Naples then suburban train to Pompeii. Do we have to book ahead the Naples leg of the journey? This is a day trip and we will return to Rome after seeing Pompeii. How long is the rain from Rome to Naples?

- Buy your ticket in advance from Roma-Napoli and Napoli-Roma legs can result in significant savings, but you must be sure of your times, because the cheaper rates are "no refund - no time change".

- Journey time: about 1 hour by high speed train.

- Check the times and buy your tickets by credit card at www.trenitalia.com (click on UK flag) or at

www.italotreno.it/EN/Pages/default.aspx (beware! in the latter case the trains leave from "Roma Tiburtina" station)

Since you are on a budget you will want to book as far ahead as you can in order to get the best rate. If you wait until the day of travel you'll pay the base rate instead of the super economy rates. You can use trenitalia or italotreno to book these tickets.

On the high speed trains the trip to Naples is about an hour. The trip on the commuter train is about half an hour.
