Is June 2 a Holiday in Italy?

I'm finding that car rental agencies in Italy that normally are open on Mondays will be closed on Monday, June 2. Is this an official holiday? What is the occasion?

It's the day the last king of Italy was kindly asked to leave asap and the Republic was proclaimed.

#2,your information is incorrect. To be more precise, the republic was proclaimed on June 18, 1946. June 2, 1946, was the day when a referendum was held to decide whether Italy should become a republic or remain a constitutional monarchy. Interestingly enough, June 2 (or rather, the first Sunday in June) was a national holiday even before, as it was Constitution Day ('Festa dello Statuto').

Thanks to all who replied, and for the history lesson. (I would have thought that on a national holiday, Italians would be eager to go rent cars for various outings, but perhaps Italians are more reverent of their National Day than the citizens of some other countries I could name.)
