Transport from florence to sorrento??

Hi:)

My hubby and I will be in Italy in July and am trying to figure out the best way to get from florence down to sorrento..... With the travel times and cost of a train would it be easier to hire a car? Has anyone done this drive?

Thanks in advance:)

Trains Florence to Naples www.trenitalia.com Click on the UK flag for current train times.

Transfer to the Naples lower basement station for the train to Sorrento and Pompeii Scavi www.eavcampania.it

The best way is to take a fast train from Florence to Naples, then go down into the basement and take the suburban Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento. The fast trains to Naples take about 3 hours, and add another hour to get to Sorrento. If you book Florence-Naples well ahead, you could get tickets for €29. Walk-up price is €68. See www.trenitalia.com and www.italotreno.it

A rental car from Florence to Sorrento would take at least 6 hours of driving (plus stops) along very busy and boring motorway, at a cost of €30.80 in tolls and about €62 in fuel. It would be insane to drive. See www.viamichelin.com

Thanks so much, sounds like the fast train is the way to go, just thought it might be nice and scenic driving a car down but actually sounds very boring and long!

In 2006, I actually did drive from Sorrento to Siena, but mostly along ordinary roads, stopping at 8 places along the way, and taking almost 3 weeks for the journey.

You can usually book 120 days out, the summer schedule won't be up to date until June 15th or so.

Are you entering Firenze S. M. Novella to Napoli Centrale? Naples to Sorrento is via the commuter train and you can't book in advance.

There is a timetable change on 15 June, and train times after that date are not yet decided. Based on experience in past years, the times probably will not be available until mid-April or even May (but not as late as 15 June). You just have to keep checking the Trenitalia web site.
