looking for advice on travel plans while in Italy

We are planning on flying to Venice the end of April and staying for two weeks. Our plans will start with 2 nights in Venice, then we were thinking of renting a car and traveling to Naples area. We are looking at taking a scenic trip and spending the night along the way. We are undecided which way would be the best scenic route to get there, and looking for recommendations which cities to stop along the way. Also we don't want to stay in Naples but on the outskirts.

Our trip will then continue from Naples to Palermo by plane. We will have a rental car in Sicily and will likely stay in Agreginto as a central point. Does anyone recommend staying anywhere else in Sicily?

Look forward to your recommendations and experiences.

Good ideas. Now, then I suggest to take the train from Venice to Florence, or Venice to Arezzo and rent a car there to continue on south. The drive south from Venice is tedious and not fun until you get into Tuscany. You will save a good bit of effort and arrive feeling better if you use the train for the first half of it. There are a great many attractive places to stay in Arezzo or just south of there.

It would take longer than driving straight through on the autostrada, but I would consider going from Venice south along the Adriatic coast, stopping for lunch and a look at the mosaics in Ravenna, then continuing on to Ascoli Piceno (a wonderful large town/small city in Le Marche) for the night.

Driving from AP to Naples the next day routes you well away from the traffic around Rome.

Learn the Italian driving laws, such as the ZTL's and the dreaded bus lanes.

You'll need an Int'l driving permit (AAA $20, you don't have to be a member)

Will you also depart from Palermo?

How long do you plan to stay in Sicily?

Sicily is a 2-week itinerary, so with less time, and an arrival in Palermo, perhaps base only in Western Sicily.

Where to stay in Western Sicily?:

Typically a day suffices in Agrigento, and Agrigento isn't considered a central point.

Hello Vagabonda, yes we will arrive in Palermo and stay 7 days, we will have a rental car. We were thinking of also staying in Taormina for at least a night.

Do you happen to know if the hydrofoils are running in May? How are the overnight ferries from Naples or Rome? We still have decided if we will fly or take the ferry, any information is appreciated.

Thank you for your advice.

I was only there on a day trip while staying elsewhere in the area, but here is the Venere.com list of hotels (12) in Ascoli Piceno: http://www.venere.com/italy/ascoli-piceno/

If you haven't yet made any travel plans, then reconsider an arrival in Palermo, and a base in Agrigento.

Taormina is located in Eatsern Sicily, and with only a week allocated to Sicily, then focus your attention on Eastern Sicily.

SNAV runs the Naples-Aeolian hydrofoil service from 31/5 to 6/9 2014.

But you could take the overnight Siremar ferry from Naples through the Aeolians to Milazzo.

The ferry departs Naples on Tuesday and Friday evenings.

Ustica Lines hydrofoils then run from the Aeolians to Milazzo or Messina.

You might take the TTT Lines overnight ferry from Naples to Catania, or you might fly from Naples to Catania.

Alitalia, Air Italy (Meridiana), or easyJet fly from Naples to Catania.

Then see Taormina, Agrigento's Valley of the Temples, and end in Siracusa to position for your departure from Catania.

For Venice-South, We find the Italian trains to be thoroughly satisfactory. In our experience, always within a few minutes of on-time, comfortable, clean, pleasant. The train from Venice to Florence will be about 2.5 hours with a stop in Bologna (assuming you get on the fast train, frecciarossa. I have not gone this way, but i would bet that you can get to Arezzo about 20-30 minutes after coming into Florence, and I would rent the car there.

But where is Nick? Why isn't he answering this question? I would yield to his greater knowledge.
