Montepulciano to Amalfi or Positano in one day doable?

We are staying in Montepulciano until the morning of October 4. We need to drop our car somewhere. This is what stumps me in moving forward. Do we drive to Chuisi drop the car and take the train to Naples meet a driver and go to either of the above towns (can't decide and can't book until these logistics are worked out) and will this be an 8 hour +day? Or drive to Rome or Florence and catch the connecting train to Naples.

Salerno is also an option from Naples with a driver taking us to our final destination.

Has anyone done this? Is this too ambitious? The planning for this 3rd week of our journey has me at a stand still leaving our final week in Rome also up in the air, so any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Chiusi to Naples is a 3 hour+ train trip each way From Naples it's another 90 minutes to get to Positano by bus or driver. That's 4.5 hours just to get there.

Montepulciano to Florence is about a 2 hour drive and Montepulciano to Rome is about a 2 hr 40 minute drive. The fast train will get you to Naples in 70 minutes and then the 90 minute trip to Positano.

Rome to Salerno is about a 2-3 hour train trip depending on the train you take. So if you drive to Rome and take the train to Salerno it will take about 5-6 hours total to get to Salerno and then ride to Amalfi or Positano by driver or bus.

Yes, it would be a long day. If you left Montepulciano at 9 am you wouldn't be getting to the AC until somewhere between 2 and 4 pm. That doesn't leave a lot of time to explore the towns or along the coast.

You didn't say where you'll be going after visiting the AC. Will you be heading to Rome the same day?

Why don't you drive to Salerno and return your car there. I am not sure if the ferry to Amalfi will still be operating in October but a bus /taxi/pre-arranged car with driver are alternatives.

Thanks for your response. Another spanner in the works is the 4th is a Sunday which may limit train times. We plan on 4-5 days on the Amalfi coast, then a train trip to Rome for 7 days.

Pick a date in the next week or so to see the Sunday train schedule to see what you can probably expect for a Sunday - it may change somewhat, but not all that much.

The only car rental offices that are open on a Sunday are at airports. Therefore Rome or Naples are your best bets.

Here's my response and I live here in Italy.

Drive the car to Amalfi Coast area Vietri =about 6 hour drive or Salerno which is much prettier. Use the car to do the Amalfi coast=from Vietri to Positano. You can do the Amalfi Coast in one day or break in the middle & do it in two days. From Positano, you can drive to Sorrento & take a day trip to Capri on a boat. Then use the car to drive back to Rome & drop the car: either at FCO airport(very easy) & then cab into Rome Euro 50 to your hotel or drop at the car rental office in Rome (probably an adventure best forgotten). On the way down to Amalfi coast, you can have a stop at Pompei to break up the day, have a nice lunch & continue to Vietri or Salerno.

While you are in Montepulciano, make sure to take a day for the Umbria hill towns (of which my Paciano is one of the prettiest),then Panicale, maybe Citta della Pieve & Lake Trasimeno.
