suggestions please!

hi guys, hope you can help

im looking to book a trip to rome and florence in may for around 6-8 days (wer quite flexible). just a bit confused about how is best to book it

1. do we fly in and out of rome and travel by train to florence for a few days and back to rome? because flight are cheaper in and out of rome than coming in to rome and out of florence.

but if it works out more practical then we would consider that...what is best to do?

2. i will be making a list of what we want to do but regarding areas to stay in rome, are there particular one (like venice has different neighbourhoods). Are there any good websites that show the areas that are close to tourist attractions?

just wondering whats best plan of action as obviously dont want to be wasting time rushing around everywhere

Thanks in advance!

Only you can decide if it's better to train to Florence and back or fly home from there. Check the trenitalia website to see what fares are and if it saves you money by training back to Rome to fly home then you may want to do that.

If you do decide to fly into and out of Rome I would suggest going to Florence first and finishing your trip in Rome. You always want to spend your last night in the city you fly out of.

As for neighborhoods that are close to sites, there is no one neighborhood that will be close to all the sites. You might want to make a list of what you plan to see and pick a hotel that is closest to the majority of them.

Grab a good map to see where the sites are located and make your list. Then choose your hotel.

if you can get a couple more days do it; two nights is one full day and it would be really good to have 5 nights 4 days in each place -- that would also allow a day trip if you were so inclined (e.g. Florence to Siena or Rome to Ostia Antica)

The best way was noted by someone above -- arrive in Rome and immediately train to Florence -- by the time you get to Florence it will be check in time at hotels and you use your first travel day to get major logistics out of the way. You do not want to be racing back to Rome the night before your flight -- that just chews up a day you could be enjoying Florence or Rome. So use that arrival day to get to FLorence. Then train back and finish in Rome and be there for your flight back home.

You should book the Florence to Rome train trip asap to get good rates. If you do that the other direction be aware that if you miss the train because of a delayed flight, you have lost the ticket. If you buy your ticket to Florence at the airport train station at FCO, they will sell you the next trip you can easily make when you buy your express ticket to Termini.
