I think you may get comments ( many unfavorable) about tours in general

Here is a link to Perillo Tours that has been active recently. There are probably others.

Most people on these forums are DYI'ers. I think if you read through some of the forums you'll see how easy it is to book a visit to Italy by yourself and be able to do and see exactly what you want to do.

Although I have never taken a tour in Italy (because I am fluent in Italian and also because Italy is small and manageable), I have very much enjoyed tours to other places. We always take tours when we travel with my elderly parents, and personally I really enjoy the other travelers and the guides.

I did recommend Gate 1 to a friend traveling alone to Italy last year, and coincidentally my husband's cousins were on the very same tour (and they are all fluent in Italian). Everyone raved about the tour, and it had an excellent itinerary. I have traveled with Gate 1 to other destinations (in Asia and Europe), and we've never had a bad tour.

We've also toured with Cosmos (France) and Go Ahead (Spain and Portugal).

Though you sacrifice some independence, we have always had great experiences with Gate 1, Cosmos, and Go Ahead. They are economical and efficient.

Plus almost all tours give you a decent amount of free time. It gives you a lot of peace of mind. Whenever we have taken a group tour anywhere in the world we have also added on a few independent days at the beginning and/or end of the tour, so I would highly recommend doing this for Italy.

Buon Viaggio!

p.s. Don't let people bully you out of taking a tour if that's what makes YOU comfortable. I find that in Europe you don't get the terrible shopping stops like you do elsewhere (like in Asia). And if you don't like the meals that are included, then just eat on your own. You're not obligated to eat the hotel meals if you don't want to (when we've taken tours in France we skip the included dinners). We've also skipped out on day trips when we were in cities where we had something else we'd rather do. Just tell the tour guide, and they've always been helpful in directing us to the place we'd rather go.

Thanks for your input. I am reviewing Tour possibilities and have not, as yet, looked over Gate 1.

Perillo has a Northern Italy Tour 14 Day ( Rome Departure or a Milan Departure) that we have been considering , One includes meals and the other does not . Will check out Gate 1 Also.

Hope there are more responses with tour company recommendations. I had not read any recent comments on Gate 1 for Italy Tours . Wondering which, if any , of the escorted tours have good Dinner meals with the tour packages. Many comments on Italy meals including dinners, have not been that promising.

Hope to hear more about GATE 1 Italy Tours. IF Not , may post a new question on Gate 1

I have to agree with the comment that you should not be bullied about going on an escorted tour if that is what you want. We toured last September/October with the Queenslander Tours group. We went to Venice, Rome, Florence/Tuscany, and Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast. Although this tour is not at all cheap, I feel that you get what you pay for-and this was one fabulous experience for the 16 members of our tour group!

We have traveled independently. but for our first trip to Italy I wanted to see the country "efficiently". We absolutely will return DIY, but I thought for our first trip it was the perfect blend of scheduled time and free time, and we hit most of the "must sees" in a seamless way.

This is a link to my review, and I will be more than happy to answer any questions either on this forum or by PM. Happy travels-and enjoy Italy....it is a beautiful country rich with culture, and filled with amazing people!

I did two identical tours with Globus years ago(one with each son) and I think if you have not been to italy before a bus tour is a great way to go. I also think they are very economical. the hotels and meals you get are entirely worth the money. after doing 3 bus tours of italy, I can now do my own thing. however I am still looking at bus tours to save money as opposed to doing it on my own.they must get great discounts on the hotels.

Enjoy.
