Please help with Itinerary; Dolomites, Tuscany, Pompeii

Hello!

Would love advice on the following (initial ideas) itinerary! My husband will be getting back from deployment and I wanted a fun trip for us to do. We'll be flying out of the London area and its been suggested we fly into Milan. We don't have a preference where we fly into so if there is a better place to start, please let me know. We usually do budget travel and backpack but if there is something special, we're game!

Questions:

For this itinerary, can we do it with public transport or would it be better to drive?

The Dolomites are fairly large, should we concentrate on anything particularly?

Are 2 nights in Cinque Terre overkill?

Should we skip Sorrento and add a day or two to the Amalfi Coast?

If we had an extra day or two, what should be add at the very tip? :)

1. Arrive in Milan, sleep in Milan

2. Milan to Dolomites (bus?), sleep in Bolzano or Castelrotto

3. Dolomites (what to do?), sleep in Bolzano or Castelrotto

4. To Cinque Terre, sleep in Vernazza

5. Cinque Terre, sleep in Vernazza (just do 1 night?)

6. Florence, sleep in Florence

7. Florence, sleep in Florence

8. Bike tour of Tuscany/wine tasking/B&B (2 days?)

9. To Sorrento, sleep in Sorrento

10. Pompeii, sleep in Sorrento?

11. Capri or Amalfi Coast, sleep in Sorrento (2 days?)

12. Leave

Thank you so much for any advice!

You have to allow for a day of travel when transferring between destinations.

Pompeii you could visit on the way to Sorrento, there is luggage storage.

Trains Malpensa Aeroporto to Milan to Bolzano to Vernazza to Florence (Firenze) to Naples (Napoli) www.trenitalia.com Click on the UK flag for current train times, enter 08 for all departure times.

Thanks for the links Nooriopta! Travel days...absolutely. This is a rough idea of the trip...primarily I just want to make sure that things are on the way and we're not back tracking. I've looked at the map and think we're ok, but just wanted to make sure.

Specifically, I'm more curios about the car situation. It sounds like trains are very possible and a car isn't needed to see the area (Tripadvisor has ongoing debates about the need for cars in Tuscany).

With this plan, should we look into getting a Eurail Pass?

Also, where can we go after Pompeii? I don't think going back to Sorrento would be productive....? I know you said Pompeii has lockers...so if we bring our things and pick them up...where can we head in the evening to get a head start?

Buy train tickets point to point for best value, and after Pompeii continue on by Eavcampania train to Sorrento.

Some advices regarding Dolomites. As you say these amazing mountains are in a very large area and in a couple of days you can just see one place, also consider that the first week of August is starting the top high season for Italian people holidays, so lot of traffic everywhere ,, specially in the motorways , possible to take long time for few kilometers. Train is the best option to reach Bolzano but I suggest to lodge in Castelrotto or Seiser Alm, not in Bolzano that it is very hot in Summer, even if surrounded by mountain, eventually consider Val Gardena, too.

Some links of this area and info about transports:
