Matera to Salerno

Thinking of staying in the Matera area for one night before heading to Salerno to drop our car rental by 1pm before heading to Almalfi. It looks like a mixture of different types of roads...what would be a reasonable travel time? Would we need to leave very early to get to Salerno by 1?

Leaving at 8.30, you should be able to have a 15 minutes break if needed.

It is just under 3 hours from Matera to Salerno (I've driven this route numerous times), unless you drive like an Italian then it would be only 2 hours.

If you are dropping your car at one of the rental locations near the train station then you are a short walk to the bus or ferry to Amalfi. I recommend the ferry as it provides a great view as you come into Amalfi.

We will be dropping the car off at the airport in Salerno. Is it also near the train station? I would very much like to take the ferry to Amalfi. We are unaccustomed to traveling with our luggage (I can't recall ever giving up our car rental so early in a trip before) is it easy to travel by ferry or train with it?

The airport for Salerno is outside of town, not near the train station. Does your car rental company have another location near the station?

We've traveled frequently with luggage by train (a roller bag and carry-on size each) and not difficult unless your car is brimming with luggage. The ferry has space for luggage but there may be an added fee.

Is the road from Matera to Salerno a mountain road with lots of curves? Thanks......am looking for the less curvy roads.

You'll be on the E847 and SS407 most of the way - they are mostly 4 lane highways (there is construction areas with lane changes). You will be driving into the mountains but the drive is not bad.
