Centro Storico

Does Reggio Calabria have an old section? All the street views of the B&B's look modern and ugly. We like the old villages. We're also foodies. We've been to 14 different regions of Italy and this September it is Calabria. We know we'll spend a few nights in Scalea and maybe a few in Pizzo. But is Reggio Calabria a place we want to stay?

Reggio di Calabria is a large urban area and was destroyed by an earthquake in 1908, so there are relatively few buildings prior to that period. However the city centre and particularly the main streets running parallel to the beautiful lungomare are full of attractive examples of Liberty style buildings arranged on a grid layout.

You could easily spend a day in Reggio wandering along the lungomare with its vistas of Sicily, visiting the cathedral, checking out the shops and having an ice cream. However if you like villages perhaps you should consider Tropea to stay in instead.

If you are foodies and into old villages, you should look into staying at the many agriturismi (guest farmhouses) in Calabria. Reggio is just a city, a grid of urban streets. Corso Garibaldi is the main street, it's a charming street. Lungomare offers nice views over to Sicily, you can see Messina and even Etna in a distance. You could ask locals about where to find good food, apart from icecream I didn't really come across any. Reggio is just a very urban environment, it's worth seeing though, it's Calabria's largest city and puts it into perspective how different it is to the other cities, Catanzaro and Cosenza, they are nothing alike!!!
