Where to stay? Sorrento, Positano? Amalfii?

We're taking my mother in law to see Pompeii and Herculaneum in mid May. We're mid 40s and she is 78 with hip replacements so can walk but not miles and miles or too uphill. Does anyone have any recommendations as to what town we should stay in? She likes 4 star hotels, we will fly in to Naples and want to eat out each night. Will everywhere be hilly? Can we get buses/trains everywhere? Any advice appreciated!

I'd stay in Naples, where you have the greatest amount of choice in both hotels and restaurants. Pompei is easily reached by bus (much more comfortable than the train), train, or cab. Herculenuem is also easily reached and is much closer to Naples than to Sorrento.

I'd stay in Sorrento, and in fact I have done so for 10 days in the past using it as a base to see Pompeii and the rest of the Bay of Naples. Sorrento is squeeky clean and beautiful and has a large restaurant and shopping selection.

on the Circumvesuviaan is is just as easy to get to Pompeii from Sorrento as Naples; 30 min from Sorrento, 40 min from Naples. Herculaneum is reached using the same Circumvesuaina train; about 50 min fron Sorrento, 15 min from Naples.

Staying on the Amalfi coast and visting Bay of Naples attractions adds about 30 min one-way to all the times that I quoted already. The Amalfi coast towns are best to styaqy in if you are going to confine yourslef to the Amalfi coast towns.
