Best place to stay given our journey plans

Hi,

We were planning to stay in Sorrento for 3 nights in September as part of a trip around Italy. However, I am now questioning whether this is sensible given our forward travel plans...

We fly into Naples and then have 3 nights where we would like to stay in or around the Amalfi coast. During this time we would like to see Pompei and also take a boat trip.

However, when we leave this area we need to travel down the coast to Castellabate for a friends wedding. I understand that there is a train that travels down to Agropoli where we can then get a taxi to Castellabate. However, to get this train from Sorrento, we would have to go all the way back to Naples.

Are you able to recommend anywhere else to stay on the Amalfi coast that wouldn't involve such a long journey? (but is also accessible from Naples airport).

Many thanks

Kerry

Dear Kerry,

you can take the train to Agropoli from Pompei railway station, you do not need to go back to Naples

But you would still have to transfer from Pompeii Scavi station on the Circumvesuviana line to Pompei station on the FS line (Italian State Railways - Trenitalia) to Agropoli-Castellabate, which must be a good 1/2 hr walk, at least; so with luggage you would need a taxi!

Naples, Pompeii and Salerno are all on the FS line between Naples and Cosenza, but you would have a problem with (direct) access to it wherever you stay on the Amalfi coast between Sorrento and Salerno (yes, I know that not all of this is technically "the Amalfi coast"!); meaning that to catch a train to Agropoli-Castellabate, you would either have to take the Circumvesuviana from Sorrento "back" to Pompeii/Naples or the SITA bus (from Sorrento, Amalfi or wherever) to Salerno.

Whilst not on the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento is a popular choice for its convenience... with easy links to the airport in Naples...

... and also to the archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum, using the cheap and frequent trains of the local Circumvesuviana railway!

...................................

And from there, if not in a tearing hurry on your relocation day, it might be rather fun to go by sea first to Positano or Amalfi - on perhaps the first of the two daily departures offered by the Alicost line...

.... to then continue on to Salerno with a Coop Sant'Andrea boat:

From the place where they'd land you, it's a walk of less than 10 minutes to Salerno's station, for the train southwards... but do be sure to check quite how well the various connections would work - as I haven't!

(You've not said quite when this is in September, but - as I recollect - in both years they've now run those services from Sorrento, the Alicost line has finished them in the latter part of that month... perhaps around the 25th ?)

High time it was updated (so do cross-check any and all times, prices etc!), but for more about the places along both the Sorrento Peninsula and the Amalfi Coast, you may like to try this 170 page 'Travel Directory' to the area:

And if it were us, I think we'd prefer to avoid the Anglo-American hordes in Sorrento - and would stay in Vietri sul Mare, at the AC's eastern end... a nice small town that has reasonably easy links with Naples airport, via the adjacent city of Salerno - as well as OK transport to Pompeii etc.

You'll find it listed in that leaflet, or could try the maps at the end of this 4 page version for a quick look at where's where....

Thank you so much for all your help.

This site seems to suggest a boat between sorrento and Salerno (although this page won't translate into English so can't be 100pc sure). Looks like a beautiful journey. Does anyone know if this is correct?

We will be traveling around 23rd sep though so based on previous posts may struggle as boat services may have stopped by then!

Wondering whether it may be easier to stay in Naples and day trip to the Amalfi coast?
