Family trip to Naples, Ischia, Capri, Amalfi C in December

Hi everyone,

We are an extended family of 6 adults and 3 young kids (4, 8, 10), hoping to holiday together in late Nov/early Dec. We are considering flying into Naples and going around the Amalfi Coast (not quite sure where to make our base yet - maybe Sorrento, hope to rent a house) for about 7-8 days.

I am trying to research and i am not sure Dec is a good time to go despite being low season. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Capri island has always been on my list of places to visit but is Capri island worth the visit without a trip to the famed blue grotto?

Thanks!

Capri is very much worth it even without the overhyped grotto trip - www.capri.net

The AC villages will be mostly shut down but there are always some (not many) restaurants open. If weather is decent, it is a great time for hiking and wandering but the boats won't be running from Positano or Amalfi to Capri.

You may want to stay in Sorrento with a few nights in Capri (there is direct ferry service between the two) - it all depends on what else you hope to do - Pompei? Herculaneum? Naples?

It's not seaside weather unless something remarkable occurs and very unusual weather happens - probably mostly in low 60s, some days coolers, maybe some warmer but if you are thinking it will be beach weather, it is not.

Hi MomCat1992,

When you say the AC villages will be mostly shut down, are you referring to shopping and touristy activities? We are hoping to get a self catering place so if we can get groceries, we are good for most of the time.

Do you think it's doable to spend a few nights in Sorrento then a couple in Ischia instead of Capri? From Sorrento, it will be great if we can go to Capri, Pompeii and either Positano or Amalfi for day trips.

My problem is I can't seem to find ferry times for Sorrento to Ischia, and Ischia to Naples for December. We will be flying in and out of Naples.

We are not expecting summer seaside weather but it'll be great if the kids can just run around at the edge of the water(sea) instead of swimming and sunbathing....

Also, in your opinion - should a family of 6 adults and 3 kids rent a minivan, rent 2 small cars, or simply reply on public transport in the AC in December?

Thanks so much!
