Which town to stay in?

We are planning an 8 night holiday in the amalfi coast region. We want to visit Pompei, Naples, Capri, Ischia, Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. Our question is which place (or 2 places) would be best for us to stay in and use as a base. We would appreciate advice from those who know the area, and in particular know how the various public transport options work, as we won't have a car.

Sorrento is the best base logistically, being the terminus of the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii and Naples (and with a direct coach service from/to Naples airport), ferries/hydrofoils to Capri and Ischia, and buses to Positano and Amalfi, where you would have to change for Ravello.

If considering 2 bases, you could also stay in Amalfi and visit Ravello from there, and in that case, you could also consider taking the Trenitalia service from SALERNO (bus from Amalfi, or ferry in summer) which stops at Pompei (a different station from Pompeii Scavi on the Circumvesuviana line which is close to the Porta Marina entrance; from the trenitalia station you have a short walk to the Amphitheatre entrance instead) and Naples.

Thank you qaminari - your information is very helpful. Some people have put us off Sorrento, saying it is too big and lacks character. Some have recommended Vico Equenso. We have also considered staying a few nights in Naples. Would love to hear your thoughts on these 3 ideas. Leonie
