Salerno to Paestum

We are stopping in port for a few hours and we would like to go to Paestum. What is the best way to do this?

Make your way to the Salerno train station. There is frequent service between Salerno and Paestum, and the trip takes about half an hour, as you can see here:

www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp…

The site is a 15-20 minute walk from the train station.

Take the Trenitalia unreserved regionale train from the Salerno train station to Paestum. Walk 700 meters along a very pretty, lightly travelled, asphalted country road to the Archeological Area. Buy a return ticket, because the Paestum station is not staffed. The fare is 3.30 Euros each way (UNICO CAMPANIA E5 ticket). On Saturday or Sunday, buy a round-trip ticket (UNICO CAMPANIA E5 weekend giornaliero) for 5.30 Euros. Stamp the ticket before you board the train. You can buy the ticket from the Salerno train station manned ticket windows, or from the electronic ticket machines, or from the newsstand inside the station foyer. Train schedules:

The UNICO CAMPANIA ticket is also valid on the hourly CSTP bus line no. 34 from Salerno to Paestum (Monday through Saturday, very few buses on Sunday). This bus departs from the coastal road off of Piazza della Concordia (400 meters from the train station), in front of the coastal parking lot facing the long pier. I do NOT recommend taking the bus, because it takes TWICE as long as the train (70+ minutes, versus 35 minutes on the train), and even longer during traffic jams. Also, the bus route is not particularly scenic or interesting. Even though the bus stops a little closer to the Archeological Area, it's nevertheless better to take the train. Bus schedules:

You'll need to take a local bus from the cruise ship dock to the train station area.

The transportation to Paestum is also covered by either a valid, unexpired UNICO CAMPANIA 3T Tourist Ticket or the CAMPANIA ARTECARD "tutta la regione" 3-day ticket.

Thank you very much for your detailed information - it will make the trip much easier. Especially since we only have about 5 hours in port.

Just a thought - what about taking a taxi from the cruise ship dock to the train station? Are they expensive??

Do be very sure to acquaint yourselves with the various timetables...

Indeed, with only some 5 hours, I rather doubt you'll be able to do the return trip by public transport..... without luck and very clever planning - especially given the gaps in the train schedule!

Forget all that about there being a "frequent service" - even on weekdays trains only leave Salerno at:

08:43, 09:27, 13:47 and 14:56 etc

.... and return from Paestum again at:

08:53, 11:12, 14:09, 14:44, 15:09 etc.

You may be able to fix something by using the CTP buses in one direction or the other but they do a while considerably longer... so it really depends on what time your ship is supposed to arrive and leave - and on which day of the week you'll be travelling?

It's a lovely site though - which you may think it merits having a private car and driver....

Otherwise Salerno itself shouldn't be dismissed too readily?

PS - Chances are, a taxi isn't going to be too keen on the 2 or 3 mile trip to the station, but I can't see how it could cost more than 10 Euro. If taking one, ask them how much it would be to do the trip to Paestum..... on a slow day they may be glad of the business?
