Ferry from Salerno to Amalfi.

Is it feasible to take a train to Salerno and the ferry to Amalfi? My travel agent says private car from Salerno to Amalfi is the way to go for $90. There must be a less expensive way to get to amalfi from Salerno.

Any advice?

Salerno to Amalfi:

8 Euros and 35 minutes on the ferry boat (April through October only) from the Concordia Dock: 800 meters from the Salerno train station; OR OR

3.40 Euros and 75 minutes on the hourly SITA bus from the train station (year-round)

Your travel agent, like all too many travel agents these days, knows nothing. Assuming you are visiting in the main tourist season (April to Sep). It is entirely feasible to take the train to Salerno, walk the 800 yards or so to the ferry dock, and enjoy a glorious ferry ride to Amalfi for 8 euros.

Thank you. We will be traveling with large suitcases. Can we walk to the dock with the luggage?

Yes, as long as the luggage has wheels. You can bring the luggage with you on the ferry boat. The terrain is flat and asphalted all the way between the train station and the dock. It takes 10 minutes to walk the 800 meters/yards. If you prefer to save energy, you can take the hourly SITA bus to Amalfi for only 3.40 Euros, which departs from outside the front doors of the station (distance 10 yards). Luggage can be stowed in the underfloor luggage compartment.

Also, weather permitting those ferries run through the end of October not just to the end of September.

Usually 15:30. Sometimes, there can be a ferry around 17:00, but only in July and August.

The SITA buses continue to run hourly to Amalfi until around 21:00.

Can anyone tell me if this ferry trip tends to be a rough or a smooth ride? We'll be there in mid July and some folks in my party can get seasick. Also considering the Amalfi to Positano ferry. Thank you.

If sea conditions are rough, the crossing is rough. If sea conditions are very smooth, the crossing is smooth. If the weather is very bad, the crossing is likely to be cancelled. For that reason, it's prudent to carry with you the SITA bus schedules (Salerno/Amalfi and Amalfi/Positano) just in case .....

In July, weather conditions are often good.
