We're planning a May 2015 trip to Italy and planning to stay in Rome 4 or 5 nights and Salerno (Train from FCO) 4 or 5 nights. We're interested in Pompeii et al, the Amalfi coast, etc , but thought about a day trip south or east by train from Salerno (which is the farthest south we've been in Italy. Any suggestions as we're open to coastal or inland sights/towns. We like quaint out of the way places with good local food... and don't mind walking or hiking as part of the trip.
BTW, I'm just getting a feel for Salerno's layout... any suggestions on neighborhoods to stay... or stay away from.
