It's quite easy to do this on your own. If you want to do both in one day you have a couple of choices.

You can take the Circumvesuviana train to Ercolano Scavi and pick up the Vesuvio Express bus service there, then afterwards take the train to Pompei Scavi, visit the ruins, then return to Sorrento on the train. You can also use the Campania Express tourist train for this routing but there are fewer of these trains each day.

The biggest plus of the above routing is that Vesuvio Express gets your ticket to climb the volcano for you.

Alternatively, you can take the train to Pompei Scavi and use the public EAV bus to get to Vesuvio and back, either before or after you visit Pompei. With this plan you need to arrange your own tickets for Vesuvio, which must be done in advance.

When we first visited Sorrento, we booked an organised trip to Pompeii and Vesuvius. We had children in tow and decided this the best way as we had pick up and return to our hotel in an air conditioned coach, also the services of three excellent guides- one on the coach, one in the archaeological site and one at the top of Vesuvius. We had the most wonderful day that was thoroughly enjoyed by the four of us. The only tour company that I know of in Sorrento is called Goldentours.

On future trips we hopped on a train and explored the archaeological site with a guide that we booked from inside the entrance, or we explored on our own at leisure. We also combined the day with a visit to a winery on the slopes of Vesuvius. You can take a bus to the volcano, but we only visited both places on our first trip.

HI there, could I ever ask for info....going to Vesuvius in a few weeks, 2 adults and 3 children. It was great to get the details re how to there from Sorrento. So if we decide to get the EAV bus from Pompeii Scavi does that bus bring you up the 1000ft to the base of vesuvius?? TIA :-)

Hi

There is a car park roughly halfway up Vesuvius and that's where the buses go. You've still got about a mile walk on loose volcanic gravel so proper shoes are required.
