How to split time between Naples and Sorrento

Hello. We are planning a one month trip to Italy next year, and would like to spend some time in this area. We are thinking of splitting time between Naples and Sorrento, maybe 4 nights in Naples and maybe 4-6 nights in Sorrento. Does this seem about right? We can easily add or cut days. This is very early planning, but here are our thoughts on how to spend the time:

-In Naples we would arrive late afternoon, then spend a day exploring Naples, a day seeing Pompei, and a day visiting Ischia. Then on to Sorrento, where we would spend arrival day and another day or 2 exploring the town, maybe with a farm or lemon tour, spend a day on a guided tour of Capri, and another day on a guided tour of the Almalfi coast. We can add more time if needed, maybe a day to explore Paestrum? Or Path of the Gods?(Is this a difficult hike? Steep or scary?)

-Does this sound like a good plan? Should we cut a day from Naples and add one to Sorrento? For example we could see Ischia from Sorrento rather than Naples? Add Paestrum from Naples or Sorrento? And are there any other major sites or activities we should add?

-Thank you so much for the help.

Obviously there is so much more to do in Naples; Sorrento for the Pompeii day trip.

Thank you. I hadn’t considered Pompei from Sorrento. Would you recommend going to Ischia from Sorrento or Naples?

This is very subjective.

I adore Naples, don't care for Sorrento - others feel the opposite.

Maybe more research into what interests you in each place will help clarify how you decide to spend your time.

The napliunplugged.com website has good info but has not been updated much as the author moved back tot he states some years ago

You could - for just another online source - look over https://artsupp.com/en/naples?orig=422212 -

I would also suggest since you are in the area for 8 or 10 days, get a good guidebook on the area, you can download many these days onto a tablet/kindle/phone - You might consider this one - "Moon Amalfi Coast: With Capri, Naples & Pompeii" - it can be downloaded and was published 2 years ago which is fairly recent.

It helps when planning to figure out what you want to see then figure out time to spend.

Naples in one day is not much which indicates you don't have much of an interest in the city so maybe just choose to stay in one destination and travel around from there.

There's also nothing simple about going from Sorrento on multiple days to the Amalfi Coast so you might want to look into what that all involves; As you mention going next year, maybe check about possibly staying in one of the Amalfi Coast villages to minimize the hassle of getting to it numerous times from Sorrento; the Amalfi Coast is very different than Sorrento - so, again, just depends on what sort of experiences you want to have.

Path of the Gods is not the easiest of hikes - there are some good youtube videos that give a good example of what it is like, some areas are easy, others parts are more challenging. In high season, with its popularity it can seem like a bit of a traffic jam up there on the path so maybe if you do it, go early in the day to avoid the larger crowds and if going in summer, to avoid the high heat of later in the day.

Thank you. I can see opinions about Naples and Sorrento vary widely. I suspect we will find Naples a bit large and hectic for our tastes. But we do want to experience it for a bit. Also, we may be taking a direct train to Naples from Venice, so basing in Naples for a few days before moving to Sorrento makes sense to us, especially if it is easier to visit certain places from Naples. I clearly have time to look into this more, but wanted some early ideas. I think we will skip Path of the Gods and keep that day for Sorrento. Thanks again.

It makes sense to first decide where you will be going and what you want to see, then choose where to stay based on the most efficient way to reach those places. Overlaid on that is your preference for the type of environment you prefer, a big city isn't for everyone.

I'll throw another wrinkle into it. Since you have the luxury of up to 10 days or so in the area, you might consider adding a couple of days on Capri. It's much better that way than by day trip, and it's beautiful. Because you go and come by ferry, you don't want to make this the last stop before any flights out, just in case.

Thank you. Yes, these are just preliminary ideas. In terms of logistics and ease of travel would you recommend seeing Pompei and Ischia from Naples or Sorrento?

Yes we had considered spending a few days in either Capri or Ischia but didn’t want to have 3 locations. Since it’s a month long trip we’ll be moving around quite a bit and this area is near the end of the trip. Another move just seemed too tiring. After Sorrento we would spend 3 nights in Rome and fly home from there(have been to Rome before so 3 nights is okay for us, it’s amazing but not our favorite city, again, too big and hectic). Thanks again for all the feedback.

Then Sorrento will be a good wind-down place for you. It demands very little of you, as it has the infrastructure for tourism so well established--lots of good hotels and other lodging, everyone customer-facing speaks English, it's very walkable, it has plenty of shops and restaurants, and its transportation links are excellent and not very far apart. Its position on the Bay of Naples is gorgeous and you get a view of Vesuvius to boot.

I like Naples a lot, too, so I would definitely have 2-3 days there.
