Dilemma - Sorrento or Amalfi as a base?

I know that this is probably an age old question but please bear with me...!

I have read that Sorrento has the better transport links than Amalfi to enable you to travel to the surrounding sights (Capri, Naples, Pompeii, Vesuvius, Amalfi Coast tour etc) . However, Amalfi sounds a bit more of an authentic town and less commercial than Sorrento

This being the case, my question is... is the accessibility of Sorrento significant enough to choose it over the more picturesque Amalfi? And if not, how much more difficult are trips to the sights mentioned above from Amalfi?

Thanks as ever!

We faced the same dilemma and in the end decided on staying in Sorrento. We prefer smaller, quieter places but decided as the main reason for visiting was to see Pompeii, Vesuvius, Herculaneum etc, it was more practical to stay in Sorrento than the Amalfi Coast as we would spend so much extra time travelling. We haven't been yet we are going in May so are yet to discover if it was the right decision!

Thank you very much for your reply - I think I knew that Sorrento was the sensible choice but we, like you, are more used to visiting the smaller, more authentic towns. We are planning to go in May too - see you there!

Think of it like this - how many days are you going to be on trips that are easier from Sorrento (Pompeii, Vesuvius etc) and how many on trips that are easier or just as easy from Amafi (Capri, Ac coast, Ravello, enjoying la dolce vita). I would MUCH prefer to stay on the Ac and in Amalfi rather than Sorrento - for the reasons you say are important to you. I don't want to stay somewhere on holiday because it's a more convenient public transport hub. Other people reach different conclusions. Go with what's more important for you, not what's right for other people.

Have to disagree. Sorrento has much more to offer than simply being a transport hub for the area. It is a vibrant bustling town in its own right with stunning views of Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples so after a days sightseeing along the coast utilising those great public transport links you can sit in a pavement cafe, relax, unwind and people watch to your hearts content.

To be fair, in essence the whole of the Amalfi Coast has had to become commercialised over the years due to its popularity with the hordes of us tourists. Not sure if any of the main towns could be considered 'small and authentic' any more. Maybe look at Positano?

As said before, it really is personal choice - my choice would be Sorrento.

I agree 100% with NBB: of course you can prefer Amalfi or Sorrento, but Amalfi being "more authentic".. I don't think so! The entire area is touristic since decades.. Which is not necessarely a bad thing.

I agree with NBB and AnarKhaos that Sorrento is so much more than a transport hub. I think a lot of people stay there because of convenience and don't tend to spend a lot of time in the town, discovering what it has to offer, or spend any time on the penninsula. Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast are victims of their own success. I have noticed a big change in the number of visitors in the past 12 years when I started going. More and more people are choosing to visit. I don't think Amalfi is more authentic though.

With regard to travelling to other places, you can still visit anywhere you may wish (Capri etc) from Amalfi. Obviously staying in Sorrento you are closer to Pompeii, Ercolano, Vesuvius, Naples. Its up to you to decide if you feel that is an issue. The journey is by no means a bad one though!!

Personally I love Sorrento and would not consider staying on the coast. I love the vibrancy of the town, the choice of restaurants/bars/cafes/shops. I feel very "at home" there. It is a busy, working town. Its not a purpose built resort that may be associated with other countries (don't want to mention any, it would only sound horrible). We have to face facts that it is getting busier, it is not for everyone though, its not a beach holiday that a lot of people like. Its a case of "each to their own".

Hope you make a decision soon, if you're going in May you'll need to be quick!
