Positano by ferry from Sorrento v car/bus!

Hi

Visiting Sorrento and would like this time to head off to amalfi/Positano area. Problem is one of party prone to coach/car sickness and another member not too good on rough seas! Can anyone with local knowledge advise is there a ferry in place to go to Positano from sorrento, and any guidance on costs/times etc. would be great. Also is it a relatively smooth journey? as have heard the buses not a good option for those with travel sickness. Thanks in anticipation

Hi and welcome to the Sorrento Forum

For the ferry to Positano and Amalfi, you'll find timetables on this link here, click on "gli orari" http://www.metrodelmare.net/ It costs 9 Euros to Positano and 11 to Amalfi one way. Its about 45 mins to Positano. Personally I think its a smooth journey although of course it depends on the sea conditions. I've never had a bad journey to either place. Its a lovely way to travel and offers a different perspective of the Amalfi coastline.

The bus to Positano and Amalfi, yes the road has lots of bends and turns. I don't think its too bad but I've never suffered from motion sickness so I can;t say how it would affect someone. Maybe someone else can comment on that for you.

The cost for the bus is 7.20 euros per person and this is valid for 24 hours. It will cover the journey to Positano, then on to Amalfi and even up to Ravello and all the way back. Its brilliant value.

A suggestion might be to take the bus one way (being at the station in Sorrento in good time to get a seat rather than having to wait for the next) and taking the boat back. The bus is often busy coming back anyway so that might be an idea for your group.

Timetables for the bus http://www.sitabus.it/sitabus/campania/orarioCAMPANIA/QUADROXV.pdf

Departs from outside the train station in Sorrento. Buy your tickets from the staff at the "stall" beside the bus. The staff are encouraging people to queue properly so there's none of the pushing any more!!

Hope that helps

The hydrofoil ride is usually rather like ours was today ....

Surprising how many people just nod for a while off!

Not as nice as usual as we were on the 'Salerno Jet' which the Caremar company seem to have borrowed for the Naples-Ischia run this summer. Most of the time we get ones with outside seating, from which the view is a whole lot better - and this we'll try to avoid in future!

There's sometimes a minute or two's turbulence on crossing from one current to another - such as, maybe, when passing between the mainland and Capri - but it's unusual to notice anyone suffering much.

In winter though things are different, and at times all the hydrofoils may be cancelled for a day or two!

Will the Metro del Mare ferry still be running in Oct? I understand it's a summer schedule and doesn't run year round. Thanks.

Not exactly - the four lines that are currently operating are scheduled to run until October 8th.

Rather than repeat everything, might I direct your attention to the last few posts here...

The local buses are small. Maybe use a larger tour bus? Golden tours (I think?) do the Amalfi Coast run to Positano etc. in air conditioned comfort - and some people on this Forum really recommend these as a comfortable way to do the trip. Along with Ellie we haven't had a really bad experience of the SITA bus trip - as long as you do get there early and get a seat. Standing, hanging onto a strap looking over the cliff side is not major fun though and can make anyone queasy even if they don't suffer from motion sickness. Glad to hear about the queing system too. Seas aren't usually too rough and it is a short journey and does give you a totally different perspective of the coastline.

Hope you can work out a good compromise for your party.

No matter what you pick up from us here, I'll bet everyone can also offer an instance when a last-minute check locally would have averted a hassle of one sort or another!

Better though that we don't relate them all?

Thanks for that comment Peter, I know checking on the day/locally is always wise but it's great to have a starting place with timetables/approx. prices etc.

Thanks to any one who put in an answer to my questions,

regards

Ellie -

Thanks for the great info you provide. I am sure I will tap into your wealth of knowledge as I continue to plan. If you happen to know, can you tell me what going rate is for car and driver in area in early April (first week - off season) and pass along names and info on some reliable drivers/companies

as well as what is a reasonable numbers of hours to contract to go to say Ravello. We are planning to stay in Sorrento. If you can recommend a moderate hotel or pensione, preferably one with fridge and microwave, very accessible to train/bus, it would be most helpful!

I await your reply and thank you in advance for your kind attention.

I'd be very appreciative.

Again, many thanks.

http://www.rotasuites.com maybe?

http://www.villaterrazza.com ?

http://www.gianpierofiorentino.com

http://www.sorrentocars.com

Allow a full day for the Amalfi Coast and Ravello trip with a private driver - not cheap but a good experience. Both of these companies are very reliable (from memory we paid around 300 euros for 5 of us in air conditioned people carrier for the day tour) and Ellie stays regularly at the Rota Suites.
