My husband and I are travelling from Rome to Sorrento in mid July. We had planned to travel by train (Rome to Naples to Sorrento) but have heard a few worrying stories about Naples train station (pick pocketers, crime, etc). Is there another way or are the stories we are hearing false?? Our other option is to train it from Rome to Naples but then get a private transfer from Naples to our hotel in Sorrento.

We just returned from this trip and we were 3 women in our 40's and 3 daughters in their 20's. We didn't really have any trouble at the Naples train station--we just were cautious and kept our luggage close. We really did not enjoy the local train from Naples to Sorrento--many,many stops so it took longer than expected and was crowded so we never were able to sit--had to stand with our luggage and hang on! ( I know that sounds whiney). We did get a driver on the way back instead of train and it was much more pleasant. We had an wonderful trip though, Sorrento and coast are amazing!!

There are some suggestions for private transfer companies in this part of the Top Questions section of the Forum. Ask for quotes, it is a very competitive market.

No doubt others will chime in with their favourite drivers. We have only used De Martino so far and found them reasonable and reliable.

The "price to beat" is the one set by the Comune of Naples in its taxi fare list, of 100 Euro.

Usually it's possible to undercut a little with one of the private hire firms.

You must be careful when in any touristy area of Italy. Not a lot of violent crime but pickpockets and beggars are a problem. When arriving in Naples train station, you can catch the Circumvisuvis train to Sorrento. That train is crowded and you should hang on to your bags. I have traveled it at least 8 times and never had a problem, but I am careful. You may take a taxi from the Naples train station to the port and take a ferry or boat to Sorrento. Oh so beautiful and peacful. Either way you should arrive safely with just a few precautions.

Went through Naples train station in September and a couple of other times prior to that in previous years. The only problem we came across was an over enthusiastic guard who noticed my friend who looked lost, so offered to show her which platform our train was departing from. I said Terri, nooooo we will find it, but too late and of course he wanted a tip. He was persistent and swore when we said no, so we gave him a couple of euro. Other than that, you can get great pizza and coffee at the station, just dont leave your belongings unattended, which is fairly obvious anywhere. have fun..

pickpockets are likely to be well dressed people or teenage girls -- just follow the common sense rules for not being a walking buffet

don't put purses down e.g. when buying tickets or leave luggage untended

you are likely to be accosted by 'helpful' men who want to carry luggage or 'show you' the train and expect a tip -- just say no, grazi

1. No robbery actually took place.

2. You ordered someone to leave the train because "you" though he looked suspicious.

3. hmmmm
